The US is known for many things: great sports, a diverse culture, big landscapes and the chance to reach success. However, when it comes to having a healthy and balanced diet, we are not necessarily the country of reference. Yet that is something that should be (and is) progressively changing as more and more people discover the myriad benefits of eating Alaska seafood. There's just no denying it-seafood harvested in the wild and cold waters of Alaska is exceptional in all regards, most importantly in terms of its nutritional value. And thanks to the fact that the Alaskan fisheries are simply brimming with stock, more and more parents and heads of household throughout the nation are going to be pushing their steak aside in preference of a nice fillet of salmon, cod, halibut, or shellfish from Alaska (and many varieties besides).
Seafood lovers in recent years may have been taken aback by reports and claims of mercury contamination or other serious concerns affecting the quality of seafood at their local market (and with good reason). Yet what these people failed to read was that the Alaskan fisheries are virtually entirely exempt from these problems, meaning that Alaska seafood is essentially the healthiest and "cleanest" of all the seafood in the world. That's not only due to certain environmental factors, but more significantly it is due to the fact that the Alaskan state government (and even the federal government, who sees the Alaskan fisheries as a serious national resource) has given sustainability and ecological pristineness lots of weight ever since the state entered the Union in 1959. Not surprisingly, it is the only state in the US that directly addresses environmental sustainability (particularly as it relates to the management of seafood resources) in its Constitution.
So the next time you are at the supermarket, instead of looking through the beef and pork sections head on over to the seafood aisle and look for a little sticker that reads "Alaska seafood," and you'll know you're about to make a good buy! Eating quality seafood of this sort several times a week will help you reduce your cholesterol levels and contribute vital omega fatty acids to your system...a true blessing.
